Thermite welding

Thermite welding is a welding process that uses the pouring of molten metal obtained by aluminothermic reaction. The equipment used consists of three main elements:

  • the mold, which gives shape to the welding
  • the charge, which forms the filler metal, and the crucible, where the aluminothermic reaction takes place that produces the molten metal;
  • The liquid steel that melts the rail ends and, after cooling, forms a homogeneous weld.

Thermit welding has several applications that help reduce the maintenance costs of railway networks. Indeed, it eliminates rail joints that are a weak point. It also eliminates wear on rail ends and fishplates while significantly extending the life of the rails. In addition, it is possible to weld rails of different sizes and with different levels of wear.

This type of welding is commonly used in high-speed and heavy-duty railway networks. However, its application is equally justified for rail cranes, overhead cranes, level crossings, and for all types of networks. The rails located in level crossings undergo significant transverse stresses that greatly accelerate track wear. Therefore, by eliminating rail joints, we contribute to eliminating this type of issue.
